Boston Bruins Lose What Might Have Been A Must Win Game In Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators took down the Boston Bruins 4-2 in Ottawa on Monday night

Mike Hoffman  Derick BrassardJean-Gabriel Pageau and Alex Burrows all scored for Ottawa as they extended their winning streak to three games. Between the pipes for the Sens was goaltender Craig Anderson made who made 25 saves on 27 shots by the Boston Bruins.

On the Boston side of things Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand were the goal scorers for the B’s with Tuukka Rask‘s saving 25 shots on 28 attempts with the fourth Ottawa goal being an empty netter. Marchand’s goal happened to be his 30th of the season which gives the Bruins forward back-to-back 30 goal seasons.

“They played their game better than we played ours.”

Unfortunately for the Bruins they found themselves down by 2 goals within the first ten minutes of the game, a deficit they were never able to overcome.

“When you get down by two in less than 10 minutes it’s tough to get back in the game.”

With the win the Senators now move four points ahead of the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division with only 12 games to go in the Bruins NHL season. With every game mattering for the bubble playoff dreams for the B’s this loss puts them 8 points behind the division leading Montreal Canadiens who are in the midst of a five game winning streak for head coach Claude Julien.

If the Bruins hope to secure a playoff spot and avoid missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the third straight year they will have to limit their losses in regulation and pull as many point out as possible. For what it is worth a simulation that was run Monday morning had the Bruins at an 81% chance of making the playoffs before their loss against the Senators, based on these simulation numbers the loss knocks the Bruins down to 80%. I would avoid putting too much weight into that simulation number specifically as other simulations peg the Black and Gold at around 75%.

The odds are in their favor but with the previous two seasons ending in a dramatic collapse anything is truly possible, all I can say is every loss in the remaining 12 games is huge.
