Boston Red Sox Veteran Dustin Pedroia Buys Team A Clubhouse Gift

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia purchased a table for the Red Sox clubhouse at JetBlue Park in Florida, according to MassLive.com. On Tuesday during media availability, Sox players took the activity very seriously according to reports.

Joe Kelly and Drew Pomeranz, Carson Smith, Kyle MartinDan Butler and Christian Vazquez all played a game of ping pong, as they did not travel with the team for the Red Sox’ loss to the New York Yankees in West Palm Beach.

The loser of each match did not get off easy. He was forced to stand shirtless with his back to the table while the winner got a free shot at the loser with the ping pong ball.

With David Ortiz now retired the clubhouse leadership is up for grabs and with Pedroia now being the longest tenured player on the team he seems like the logical choice to be that player. Dustin has generally been the kind of leader that leads by example on the field instead of in the locker room.

But the veteran second basemen has helped out his teammates in the past by helping fix Mike Napoli‘s swing and as recent as last season after reviewing game film he helped Red Sox pitcher David Price figure out his flaws in his leg kick height.

Maybe buying a ping pong table for the team is the right way to build team unity in the post David Ortiz era.
